      2.DrMartinLutherKing,Jr.

      ItwasDecember1955,andMartinLutherKing,Jr.hadjustreceivedhisdoctoratedegreeintheology.HehadmovedtoMontgomery,Alabamatopreach(講道)ataBaptistchurch.Hesawthere,asinmanyothersouthernstates,thatAfrican-Americanshadtorideinthebackofpublicbuses.DrKingknewthatthislawviolatedtherightsofeveryAfrican-American.HeorganizedandledaboycottofthepublicbusesinthecityofMontgomery.Anyperson,blackorwhite,whowasagainstsegregation(種族隔離)refusedtousepublictransportation.Thosepeoplewhoboycottedwerethreatenedorattackedbyotherpeople,orevenarrestedorjailedbythepolice.After382daysofboycottingthebussystem,theSupremeCourtdeclaredthattheAlabamastatesegregationlawwasunconstitutional.

      African-AmericanswerenotonlysegregatedonbusesthroughouttheSouth.Equalhousingwasdeniedtothem,andseatinginmanyhotelsandrestaurantswasrefused.

      In1957,DrKingfoundedtheSouthernChristianLeadershipConference(南方基督教領(lǐng)導(dǎo)會(huì)議)andmovedbacktohishometownofAtlanta,Georgia.ThiswasthebeginningoftheCivilRightsMovement.Inthefollowingyears,hecontinuedtoorganizenon-violentprotestsagainstunequaltreatmentofAfrican-Americanpeople.Hisphilosophyremainedpeaceful,andheconstantlyremindedhisfollowersthattheirfightwouldbevictoriousiftheydidnotresorttobloodshed.Nonetheless,heandhisdemonstratorswereoftenthreatenedandattacked.Demonstrationswhichbeganpeacefullyoftenendedupinviolence,andheandmanyotherswereoftenarrested.

      TheCivilRightsActof1964waspassed.ItwasnotthefirstlawofcivilrightsforAmericans,butitwasthemostthoroughandeffective.Theactguaranteedequalrightsinhousing,publicfacilities,votingandpublicschools.Everyonewouldhaveimpartialhearings(申訴的機(jī)會(huì))andjurytrials.Acivilrightscommissionwouldensurethattheselawswereenforced.DrMartinLutherKing,Jr.andthousandsofothersnowknewthattheyhadnotstruggledinvain.InthesameyearDrKingwontheNobelPeacePrizeforleadingnon-violentdemonstations.
