DrFrankensteinisafictitiousscientistportrayedbyMaryWollstonecraftShelly,whowasShelly’swife.Shewashonoredasapioneerofthesciencefiction(genre).Shelley,MaryWollstonecraft(1797-1851),Englishnovelist.DaughteroftheBritishphilosopherWilliamGodwinandtheBritishauthorandfeministMaryWollstonecraftGodwin,shewasborninLondon,andprivatelyeducated.ShemettheyoungpoetPercyByssheShelleyinMay1814,andtwomonthslaterleftEnglandwithhim.WhenShelleysfirstwifediedinDecember1816,hemarriedMary.In1818herfirstandmostimportantwork,thenovelFrankensteinwaspublished.Aremarkableaccomplishmentfora20-year-old,theworkwasanimmediatecriticalandpopularsuccess.Repeatedlydramatizedforboththetheaterandmotionpictures,thistaleofFrankenstein,astudentoftheoccult,andthesubhumanmonsterheassemblesfrompartsofhumancorpsesaddedanewwordtotheEnglishlanguage:A"Frankenstein"isanycreationthatultimatelydestroysitscreator.NootherworkbyMaryShelleyachievedthepopularityorexcellenceofthisfirstwork,althoughshewrotefourothernovels,booksoftravelsketches,andmiscellaneoustalesandverse.Oneofhernovels,TheLastMan(1826),revealsherliberalsocialoutlook;anotherofherbooks,Lodore(1835),isanovelizedautobiography.
