OnceuponatimeanorphannamedCharitylivedinafinehousewithawickedoldwomanandhermeandaughter.TheywerecrueltoCharity,makingherworkharddayandnight.
Oneday,theysentCharitytothemarketwithonlyatinypieceofbreadforlunch.Ontheway,Charitypassedunderabridgewhereshesawanuglyoldbeggar.
“Ihavehadnothingtoeatfordays,”theoldbeggarsaid.
Charitygavehimhersmallpieceofbread.Suddenly,heturnedintoawizard.
“Yourkindnesswillberewarded,”hesaid.“Everythingyoutouchwillturntogold.”
Charityreacheddownandtouchedastonewithherfinger.Itturnedtogold.
Later,whenthewickedwomanandherdaughtersawthegoldstone,theydemandedtoknowwhereitcamefrom.Charitytoldthemaboutthewizard.
“Whereishe?”theyasked.
“Underthebridge,”repliedCharity.
Thenextmorning,thewickedwomanandherdaughterpackedafinelunchofbread,cheese,andmeat,andtheywenttothebridge.Whentheygotthere,theysearchedforthewizard,buttheyonlyfoundtheuglyoldbeggar.
