(1)vt.拒絕;不接受;不肯Heaskedhertomarryhim,butsherefused(tomarryhim).他向她求婚,但是她拒絕了。Sherefusedhisoffer.她不接受他的求婚。
(2)refuse還可跟動詞不定式構(gòu)成refuse+todo;也可用于被動結(jié)構(gòu)。Sherefusedtogohome.她不回家。Theywererefusedadmittance.他們被拒絕入內(nèi)。
(3)vi.拒絕Hecantrefuseifyouaskpolitely.你如果禮貌地請求,他是不會拒絕的。
注意:refuse只接不定式,不接動名詞,不接不定式的復(fù)合賓語結(jié)構(gòu),也不接賓語從句,如:不說,Herefusedmetogo(going)there.而應(yīng)說:Hedidntallowmetogothere或Herefusedtoletmego.他不讓我去那兒。
辨析:refuse與reject
refuse和reject都有“拒絕”的意思,有時可以通用,有時用法又不同。refuse強(qiáng)調(diào)堅(jiān)定地拒絕,后可接動詞不定式。reject強(qiáng)調(diào)當(dāng)前拒絕對方的請求、提議的情況,一般后面不接動詞不定式。如:Herefusedtospeakatthemeeting.他拒絕在會上發(fā)言。Herejectedmyrequest.他當(dāng)面拒絕了我的要求。
