MoreaboutMarkTwain
SamuelLanghorneClemenswasborninFlorida,,Missourion30thNovember,1835,andbroughtupinHannibal,Missouri.Whenhisfatherdiedin1874,hewasapprenticedtoaprinter,andworkedasaprinterandcontributertolocalnewspapersuntil1875.Hethenspent3yearsworkingasapiolotonasteamshipontheMississippiRiver.DuringtheCivilWarhefoughtfortheConfederates.Thename“MarkTwain”wasfirstusedonFebruary3rd1863inahumorousnewspapertravelarticle.
In1864hemovedtoCaliforniaandworkedonvariousnewspapers.HetraveledtoHawaiiandlecturedandwroteonhistripafterwards.HealsovisitedFranceandItaly,andin1869wroteInnocentsAbroadbasedonhisexperiences.
In1870hemarriedOliviaLangdon,withwhomhehadfourchildren.
Hethenbegenwritingfilltime,andprouducedTheAdventuresofTomSawyer(1876),ThePrinceandthePauper(1881),LifeontheMississippi(1883),andTheAdventuresofHuckleberryFirm(1884).Thesebroughthimweathandfame,andhelecturedintheUSAandUK.
Inthe1890s,however,helosthismoneywhenhispublishingcompanyfailed.HetriedtoregainhiswealththroughLecturetourofNewZealand,Australia,IndiaandSouthAfrica.However,hisdaughterdiedonthetrip.
Hewrouteanumberofotherpopularbooks,forexample,AConnecticutYankeeinKingArthur’sCourt(1889),TheTragedyofPuddenheadWilson(1894),APersonalRecollectionofJoanofArc(1896).Healsowroteaarticlesandshortstories.Afterhiswifedied,hebecameasadoldman,anddiedon21stApril,1910.
